Before you call
What to know before you call
Check the simple things first
Confirm the thermostat is set to heat and has working batteries, the furnace power switch is on, and the air filter is not clogged.
If you smell gas, leave first
Get everyone outside, then call your gas utility or 911 from a safe distance. Do not flip switches or use anything that could make a spark.
Carbon monoxide matters
A furnace problem can release carbon monoxide. Keep working CO detectors on every level of your home, and if one sounds, get to fresh air and call for help.
