Signs to watch for
Signs your air conditioner needs repair
Warm or weak airflow from the vents
The system runs constantly but the house stays warm
Short cycling, turning on and off every few minutes
Grinding, squealing, or rattling noises
Water pooling near the indoor unit
Ice on the refrigerant lines or outdoor unit
Before you call
What to know before you call
Check the simple things first
Make sure the thermostat is set to cool, the setpoint is below room temperature, and the breaker for the outdoor unit has not tripped. A clogged air filter can also choke airflow.
Turn it off if you see ice
Ice on the lines usually points to an airflow or refrigerant problem. Running an iced over system can damage the compressor, so switch it off at the thermostat and let it thaw before service.
Repair or replace?
Age, repair history, and how well the system keeps up all factor in. If replacement makes more sense than repair, we will explain why and the decision is yours.
